Squarespace 7.1 & 7.0 · Also Wix, Webflow, Framer

Squarespace SEO expert for sites that look better than they rank.

Nine of my clients run on Squarespace. I work inside the site you have: the settings most sites leave on default, the page structure Google needs, blog SEO and AI search. No migration to WordPress, no plugin you do not need.

Is Squarespace good for SEO?
Yes.

With four things the platform leaves to you.

  1. 01One H1 per page, and real page titles instead of "Home"
  2. 02Clean URL slugs, with 301s when they change
  3. 03Image file names, sizes and alt text
  4. 04Schema through code injection, so AI answers can read you
Squarespace handles
  • SSL, sitemap, mobile layouts, clean HTML
  • Core Web Vitals, mostly, if the images are sane

The argument
The platform is rarely the problem. The defaults are.
Watercolor elevation sketch of a small owner-run studio shopfront with a square window, a dusty-blue door, a chalkboard sign and a bicycle outside.

Squarespace ships every site with the same title pattern, design headings that become three H1s on one page, a blog with no excerpts or authors, and images uploaded straight from the phone. None of that is a ranking penalty. All of it is a page Google cannot read properly, multiplied across the whole site. Squarespace SEO is mostly the patient work of undoing defaults, then building the pages the site never had.

The Squarespace SEO checklist, setting by setting

Ten places in the Squarespace admin where most sites still have the default. The left column is what I usually find. The right column is where it ends up.

Squarespace SEO services, done inside your site

Each piece of the work lives in a specific part of the Squarespace admin. You see every change as it happens.

Settings › SEO · Pages01

The settings sweep

Every title, description, slug and heading on the site, fixed page by page. Two to three days of work that most Squarespace sites have never had done.

Pages02

One page per service or specialty

The services list becomes a set of pages, each built around one search term, with the copy, the headings and the internal links to match.

Blog03

A blog that leads somewhere

Posts that answer questions people actually search and link to the page that sells. Categories, excerpts and authors set so Google can read who wrote it.

Code injection04

Schema and AI search

Business, service, person and FAQ markup injected properly, so Google shows rich results and ChatGPT and AI Overviews have something to cite.

Assets05

Images that do not sink the site

Resized, renamed and described. The single biggest speed fix on most Squarespace sites, and the one nobody wants to do.

Developer tools · Analytics06

Search Console and tracking

Verified, sitemap submitted, Search Console read monthly so decisions follow real queries rather than Squarespace's own traffic panel.

§ 03 · On Squarespace right now

Nine practices and brands, one platform.

Six of them below, three more who prefer not to be named. Therapy practices, a nutrition brand, a wellness coach. Most came with the same six defaults, and most now rank for the specialty or product they are known for rather than for their own name only.

Squarespace vs WordPress, Wix and Webflow for SEO

The honest version: for a site under a hundred pages, the platform decides maybe a tenth of the result. The pages decide the rest.

Also on Wix, and the proof is a Wix site

Shifting Tides Psychotherapy runs on Wix. The same work, one page per specialty, credentials where Google looks, local schema, took the practice from about one organic visit a month to 3.5× the inquiries in a year. Wix SEO services, Webflow and Framer follow the same method with different panels.

§ 06 · How it works

Audit, sweep, build. Then only what the site still needs.

  1. 01

    The $99 audit

The ten settings, the page structure, the keyword landscape and AI search. Five business days.

  2. 02

    The settings sweep

A one-off scope: every title, slug, heading, image and redirect fixed inside the site. Most sites need only this.

  3. 03

    Pages and content

One page per service, a blog that leads somewhere, schema and local work. A few days a month, month to month.

An aside

If someone has told you to leave Squarespace to rank, get the audit first. The site is usually fine. The settings are not. Book the $99 Squarespace SEO audit→

§ 07

Squarespace and SEO, the questions that come up

Is Squarespace good for SEO?

Yes. Squarespace gives you everything a small site needs to rank: editable titles and descriptions, clean URLs, SSL, an automatic sitemap, mobile layouts and reasonable speed. What it does not do is make those choices for you. Most Squarespace SEO problems are default settings, duplicate headings, unnamed images and a services list where there should be service pages. Those are fixable inside the platform.

Do I need a Squarespace SEO plugin?

No. The built-in SEO panel covers titles, descriptions, slugs and social sharing, and code injection covers schema. Third-party Squarespace SEO plugins can be a useful checklist for a DIY owner, but they do not do anything a person cannot do directly, and they add scripts to a site that should stay light.

Is WordPress better for SEO than Squarespace?

For a content-heavy site with a team publishing daily, WordPress gives more control. For a practice, a studio or a small shop with under a hundred pages, the difference in ranking potential is close to zero, and Squarespace is easier to keep healthy. I do not move clients to WordPress to rank. I fix the Squarespace site they have.

How do I improve SEO on my Squarespace site?

Start with the ten settings in the checklist on this page: title format, page titles and descriptions, slugs, one H1 per page, image names and alt text, blog settings, redirects, schema, hidden pages and Search Console. Then build one page per service instead of a list. That sequence fixes most of what holds a Squarespace site back.

Is Squarespace 7.1 better for SEO than 7.0?

7.1 is faster, has cleaner templates and better section-level control, and it is the version Squarespace maintains. If you are on 7.0 and planning a redesign anyway, move. If the 7.0 site is working, the SEO gains from switching alone are small and the redirect work is real.

Is Squarespace too slow to rank?

Rarely. Squarespace sites fail Core Web Vitals when they carry six-megabyte images, autoplay video banners and five embedded scripts. With images handled and the extras removed, most pass. Speed is one signal of many, and a slow Squarespace site with the right pages still outranks a fast one with none.

How do you get access to my site?

You invite me as a contributor from Settings, Permissions, with Administrator or Website Editor access. I work directly in the site, you see every change, and you can remove the access when we are done. No passwords change hands.

Do you offer a Squarespace SEO audit on its own?

Yes. The $99 audit covers any platform, and on Squarespace it checks the settings in the checklist above along with the keyword landscape, content gaps and AI search visibility. Many clients run the fixes themselves from the report.

Is a blog on Squarespace worth it?

Only when each post answers a question people search and links to a service page. Squarespace's blog is good enough for that: categories, excerpts, authors and clean URLs. A blog that exists because someone said you should have one is an island, and I will tell you to stop before I tell you to write more.

Can a Squarespace site rank locally?

Yes. Local rankings come from your Google Business Profile, your reviews and the location signals on your pages, not from the platform. I set up the local schema and the service-area content on the site and the profile work alongside it.

Do you also work on Wix, Webflow, Framer or WordPress?

Yes. Squarespace is the platform most of my clients use, which is why it has its own page, and the approach is the same elsewhere. My most-cited therapy case, Shifting Tides, is a Wix site.

How much does a Squarespace SEO expert cost?

Squarespace SEO specialists charge anywhere from a one-off settings sweep in the hundreds to monthly retainers in the low thousands. I start every site with the $99 audit, scope a one-off fix when that is all it needs, and work a few days a month when there is content and local work worth doing. No contract beyond the month.
